Malatya

Barry reminisces...
I was best able to participate in my vocation (music) in Malatya. At a barbecue my first ight there I met the chairman of the music department of the loal university (Inonu University), and music director of the Second Turkish Army. We had very interesting conversations. The next day I was invited to give a 45 minute lecture about my music at the university for the whole music department. That was very fun, and they seemed to enjoy it, especially when an apparent argument broke out between the chairman and the Army band master over my calling an amplified trumpet an electric trumpet.(?) We were all then treated to an impromptu recital of their students performing Western classical and Turkish folk music. Very fun. The chairman, himself, taking off his jacket and breaking into a folk dance. Very good quality musicians.
